I have taken over a web site from a wizard who has gotten too busy to keep it up.

I'm semi-literate but have been having a heck of a time getting a calendar up on the site. I keep getting the old 500 error.

Can someone take a look. I'll give the password to a reliable administrator if need be.

Where is a good place to find a real basic tutorial on how to actually send commands to the web site?

I use both FTP Commander and my command prompt.

Thanks for any help

You should take a look at the documentation.
Section 3
Oh no! I get the dreaded "500 internal server error"

* If you used ftp to upload the files, make sure you used the correct mode (binary mode for graphics or zip files, ASCII mode for everything else.)
* Double-check those permissions...
* Does your ISP have any special rules or instructions for running perl scripts?
* If you have shell access (telnet or ssh) to the account where Plans is running, try running the script from the command prompt - cd to the directory where plans.cgi is, and type “plans.cgi” or “perl plans.cgi”. You’ll get a more detailed error message.
* If you or your ISP use suexec, you may want to check the suexec log file (usually /var/log/apache2/suxec.log) which may complain about the plans directory being writable by others. Simply chmod it 755 instead of 775.
* If all else fails, ask for assistance on the forum

You don't state what platform your installation of Plans is on.

Server Operating System
I just checked with Netcraft, it appears your server operating system is Linux and your webserver is Apache.
Webserver (i.e. Apache or IIS)
Browser
Desktop operating system

You should also run plans in diagnostic mode by adding this to the end of your URL ?diagnostic_mode=1.

EDITED: I see that the script was renamed to calendar.pl, and the diagnostic mode will not work. Usually the plans.cgi is renamed because of some reason or other, due to the web host not being able to run cgi scripts (this is just a guess).
